New timber is full of tannins and oils, which need to be removed from the surface before any decking oil or stain can be applied. If not properly removed from the timber, tannins and oils can cause a patchy appearance and will compromise the longevity of a coating by affecting its absorption and adhesion to the timber. There are 2 options here. You can just let it naturally weather over a period or there are some preparatory products available that can speed this process up. We can help with this during the quote.

It is highly recommended with the often brutal outdoor conditions in our region that if you have a stained deck that you get at least one coat of stain into it every 12 months—more if possible. If this is neglected and the timber starts to go grey, it can get extremely hard to restore it to its former glory.
