Who We Are

Our Story

Pete’s Painting Solutions has been in operation for 8 years, serving the Far North Queensland region. With our experience in the hot, humid far North Queensland climate, we ensure that all our painting works can withstand the Australian sun.

Pete’s Painting Solutions is proudly an Australian family owned and operated company, with three brothers working together with a great crew of tradespeople.

Meet our team

Peter Raby - Owner & Director

Pete has been in the industry for 12 years. Pete has lived permanently in the Cairns area for the last 10 years, while identifying a huge gap in the local market, being that there were no mid-size companies servicing the domestic sector. He created Pete’s Painting Solutions to fill that void so the domestic customers could enjoy the benefits that a company structure brings over small operations. Since then he has branched out into the larger commercial market and completed a number of large iconic, landmark buildings in Cairns. However, PPS will never lose sight of its original vision of servicing the domestic market in far North Queensland

Pete’s experience in domestic and commercial painting ensures that your project is quoted to the finest detail, to include everything you need with 100% clarity between the clients and Pete’s Painting Solutions.

Pete and his management oversee all aspects of your job from the initial contact to the hand-over of the job, giving you the confidence that your job will be completed in the best timeframe, to the highest quality.

Nick Raby - Operations Manager

Nicks’s pre-painting experience was as the operations manager for Buildsafe Australia, building that company from one branch with 25 staff to several branches with more than 200 staff in his 12-year tenure. This gives Nick exceptional management and control qualities that have transferred wonderfully into PPS and has truly transformed our accountability. Nick’s 2 years so far in the painting industry has really given him the insight to control all facets of operation very efficiently. Also, Nick’s experience at Buildsafe means there is absolutely nothing about access that he is not an absolute expert on.

Nick ensures that the staff are reliable, inspecting the site frequently throughout the job for quality control.

Andrew Raby - High Risk Machinery Operator & Scaffolder

Andrew’s high-risk skills enable the team to perform all works at multiple levels. Ensuring that Pete’s Painting Solutions is working safely to the Australian building standards.

Andrew has 6 years’ experience in the painting industry and a large amount of time working in height access. This makes Andrew uniquely qualified as he can perform both painting and access simultaneously. In Cairns, if you take just one look at the Reef Casino, Drew painted the whole exterior virtually single handedly.

Our team of painters

Our team consists of a crew of up 12 tradespeople. With many staff living locally, both male and female, we ensure that our skillset is adequate for every job. With many different areas of expertise across our team, we can perform all painting works to the best ability.

With a number of our painters having in excess of 20+ years’ experience, this gives us a very large combined total of years in the industry, meaning there is not much we have not seen or cannot get the appropriate skillset for.

Looking after internal paintwork

Caution with newly painted areas

Cleaning of fresh paint film will damage the paint, and this may require repainting to restore the desired level of finish.

Avoid cleaning the paint finish until at least four weeks after application to ensure the paint has had sufficient time to fully cure.

Always test the cleaning method in an inconspicuous area to ensure the cleaning process you plan to use does not alter the finish of the paint.

Cleaning internal walls & ceilings

To maintain a freshly painted look on your internal walls or ceilings the trick is to clean them on a regular basis and to react quickly to serious stains.

  • Start with clean water on a rag or a nonabrasive sponge or paper towel and rub the stain gently.
  • Do not saturate the cloth as this could cause runs and streaking.
  • If that doesn't work, dip the rag or sponge into water mixed with a little dishwashing liquid, the milder the better.
  • If the stain persists, the next step would be to apply a few drops of detergent directly onto the wet sponge or cloth you're using. For more stubborn cases, you could apply a little detergent right onto the stain.

  • Do not vigorously scrub the surface nor use an abrasive or strong cleaning agent as you may damage the paint finish. These areas that have been scuffed up will attract dirt more readily and you will end up with a worse looking condition.
  • To achieve an even finish, dry the surface with one final wipe using a soft lint-free cloth.

Cleaning internal doors & trim

  • Use the same process as you would with internal walls and ceilings.

Looking after external paintwork

Contaminants, which settle on paint film, can attack the surface and cause premature coating breakdown. Regardless of the substrate type, all exterior painted surfaces will benefit greatly from an annual clean. Pay attention to areas that are not subject to regular rain exposure.

The procedures noted below will increase the life of the coating and maintain the aesthetic properties of the paint finish.

External walls, facades & associated items

  • Prepare a bucket of warm water mixed with a detergent.
  • For basic cleaning, apply with a soft-bristle cleaning brush or broom. For tough stains, use a nonabrasive nylon scrub pad.
  • Start at the top of the building, moving downwards to reduce streaking. Use a garden hose to rinse off each section before it dries.

  • To clean mould and mildew stains use a solution of 1-part bleach in 4 parts water. Rinse thoroughly while the painted surface is still wet. Remember to wear the appropriate safety equipment.
  • If you have a power washer use it at the lowest pressure possible. Use a wide spread fan tip and NEVER place the tip close to the wall surface. Remember, you can do serious damage to your exterior wall if improperly used.

Repairs to timberwork

Timber exhibits a high level of movement as it expands and contracts in hot and cold conditions. Certain types of timber are more prone to cracking. When cracks occur in timber, timely maintenance is essential as moisture readily enters the area causing blistering, mould and rotting. Rectification should be carried out by a suitably qualified professional applicator.

Repairs to steelwork

All traces of rust must be removed via mechanical means then spot primed and top coated. This should be carried out by a suitably qualified professional applicator.

Fire and safety precautions

  • Storage - paint should be stored in dry, shaded conditions away from heat and ignition sources.
  • Ventilation - the use of suitable ventilation during painting operations should be promoted.
  • Ignition - painting should only be undertaken when all naked lights and unprotected electrical equipment have been removed from the area.
  • Waste disposal - any waste should be dealt with in accordance with the relevant local requirements.
